Here and Now

This song is an example of the fundamental creative relationship within the band. Originally a haunting tribute Chico wrote for his mother in a desperate attempt to understand her untimely death in a car accident, Keith heard the lyrics and immediately produced a sparkling melody. Josh then remolded the piece into a new-age message about living in the moment. A contentious situation followed, with each standing firm, but tensions were soon alleviated when Chico decided his “mom would like it better this way anyway.”

Lyrics:

MIRRORED GLASSES AT MY FRONT DOOR
YOU KNOW GOOD NEWS WAS NOT IN STORE
YOU HIT THAT TREE DOING SIXTY-THREE
YOU WERE GONE INSTANTLY
TWENTY YEARS AGO WITH YOU,
THROUGH A CLOUD OBSCURED THE VIEW
I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU WENT AWAY
LONG BEFORE YOUR HAIR TURNED GREY

CHORUS:

A MINUTE AGO, AN HOUR FROM NOW
I HEARD THAT SOUND WHEN YOUR TREE CAME DOWN
A MONTH TO LIVE, 5 MINUTES PAST
DOES ANYONE HEAR THAT ONE HAND CLAP?
NOTHING WAS LEFT UNTOLD
YOU NEVER GOT TO GROW OLD
I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE YOU AGAIN
BUT FIGHTING FATE, THAT’S NOT ZEN

CHORUS:

BEEN TIED DOWN BY THE FACTORY BELT
NEVER THOUGHT HOW I REALLY FELT.
NOW I’VE COME OUT FROM THE CLOUDS,
FINALLY LIVING IN THE HERE AND NOW….
HERE AND NOW….HERE AND NOW
